Dragline

A dragline excavator is, usually, a very heavy or large scale piece of excavation equipment, which is most often employed in mining. Smaller variations are sometimes used in the construction of roads, and are often used for the construction of ports. How they differ from conventional excavators is that the bucket is hung from the boom by wires, which are connected to a system of chains and ropes. The two most important of these ropes are the hoist rope, and drag rope. Often powered by diesel motors, or electric in the case of the larger machines, manipulation of these two ropes is what controls the operations of the bucket.

Draglines

Excavations by draglines are conceptually simple, but require a high degree of skill to operate. The hoist rope, as its name suggests, controls the vertical movements, and the drag rope the horizontal movements. The bucket tends to be lowered onto the material waiting to be excavated, before being pulled, by the drag rope, across the material, scooping it up, and then the hoist rope is used to lift the bucket back up. The boom will then slew towards the dumping site, where the drag rope is again used to tip the bucket, and dump the debris. This is why draglines are useful for large scale excavations, because of their ability to keep down the cost of waste removal.

Dragline excavators

Smaller scale dragline excavators are less commonly used in civil construction now, because of the development of versatile hydraulic excavators, which use less power and are more easily manoeuvred. However, they are still used for river dredging and gravel pit works.
