Finding The Right Excavator For The Right Job 13/02/2008

For construction site managers utilizing the right equipment for the right job is tricky business. Using equipment that is either overextended or underused can result in loss of productivity, and added costs. That's why it's important to find the appropriate excavator. The under-utilization or over extending an excavator can also be unsafe practice as well as a loss of time and money.

In order to calculate the right machine there is a simple equation which can be a very useful starting point.

Look at the cost per unit of excavation + The job condition the machine will work in.

If we take these two principles and understand them we can go along way to making the right decision.

The cost per unit of excavation is the amount it costs to excavate per unit volume of the material found in the job site. This could mean that if the job is a large one, it maybe more cost effective to get a larger machine for the job, rather than over extending a smaller one. The rule of thumb is that the cost per volume of excavation is less for large excavators than small ones.

To determine the job condition, look at the size and weight of the material to be excavated. If the material is hard and tough, like blasted rock, then the bucket size of the machine will need to be large in order to handle the piece. If using a smaller bucket, the project time could be longer and production value and cost effectiveness is less.
