Mobile Crane Destroys House 01/03/2008

A mobile crane in Broadstairs, Kent has collapsed, demolishing a new build house. The mobile crane toppled over onto the house, with the cab falling onto its side. Once the mobile crane had fallen on its side, the arm of the mobile crane went through the roof of the house. The arm of the mobile crane was left hanging over the road.

The operator of the mobile crane was not injured, but it has been reported that the mobile crane operator was treated for shock. To remove the mobile crane, two other cranes were called in, taking the crane away from the road and home.

The mobile crane fell on an unoccupied property, it has been suggested. This is arguably because the new build houses have not yet been sold.

This is not the only recent example of mobile cranes being damaged by falls. As a result of bad weather, mobile cranes at the port of Felixstowe were damaged by strong gusts of wind. The high wind speeds led to several people in the area becoming injured in incidents were falling trees or parts of buildings fell.
