Volvo To Take On Hitachi Excavators In Russia 16/03/2008

It has been reported that Volvo is planning to put itself into competition with Hitachi excavators as it looks set to establish am assembly plant of Volvo excavators in Kaluga, Russia. Currently, the Russian excavator market is dominated by Hitachi excavators, which occupies up to 40 per cent of the Russian market. Volvo reportedly sold over 400 excavators in Russia in 2007. It has been estimated that the Russian excavator market as a whole is worth around 500 million Euro.

The plans for the Volvo plant will aim to adopt some level of share in sales of excavators from Hitachi excavators. This is the second assembly plant set up by Volvo to assemble excavators in the Russian market.

It has been reported that the Volvo excavator plant, which arguably will provide competition for Hitachi excavators, will cost up to ten million Euro. Hitachi excavators look likely to be established within Russia, though it should be noted that Hitachi, in relation to the Russian production of Hitachi excavators, no final decision has been made. In addition to Hitachi excavators, Komatsu have reportedly expressed an interest in tapping into the Russian excavator market by establishing an assembly plant in Russia.
